Description
Zonulin Profile — Stool
Zonulin is the master regulator of intestinal tight junctions — the proteins that control what passes through the gut wall into the bloodstream. Elevated stool zonulin directly indicates increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”) at the mucosal level. This standalone test is ideal for monitoring leaky gut status or confirming intestinal permeability without a full stool pathogen panel.
Marker Measured:
- Zonulin (stool): Quantitative measurement of the tight junction regulatory protein in stool — elevated levels indicate active intestinal hyperpermeability and mucosal barrier breakdown
Clinical Applications:
- Confirming leaky gut in patients with autoimmune disease, food sensitivities, or chronic inflammation
- Monitoring intestinal barrier repair during treatment
- Add-on to GI-MAP® or as standalone leaky gut marker
- Correlating with serum Occludin/Zonulin antibodies from Cyrex Array 2
Why Stool Zonulin vs Serum:
Stool zonulin reflects local mucosal permeability more accurately than serum zonulin (which can be elevated by complement activation and other non-gut factors).
Sample Type:
Stool — single collection.
